'Cats Open Series With 7-2 Win at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. — Will Schomberg turned in another strong performance on the mound, and the Davidson Wildcats won their series opener 7-2 at Rhode Island Friday afternoon.
It's the Wildcats' eighth win in 10 Atlantic 10 Conference games, while the Rams fell to 6-4 in league play.
Schomberg (6-2) tossed seven innings and struck out seven, including two in the second and seventh. He allowed three hits and one earned run and walked four.
The Wildcats gave Schomberg early run support and sprinkled in more as the game wore on. Ryan Wilson scored on a Henry Koehler fielder's choice in the first, then hit a solo home run, his league-leading 15th, in the third.
Michael O'Shaughnessy's RBI-single made it 3-1 in the fourth, and Jacob Hinderleider plated two more with a single in the seventh. The Wildcats extended their lead to 7-1 in the ninth when Wilson scored on a passed ball and O'Shaughnessy singled in Hinderleider. Wilson, Hinderleider and O'Shaughnessy had three hits apiece.
Right-hander Bennett Flynn entered to start the eighth and recorded the final six outs.

The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.
