Wildcats To Meet Wolfpack in Charlotte Tuesday

4/17/2023 3:33:00 PM | Baseball

The Davidson baseball team will step into a professional ballpark for the second time this season and see a second straight Atlantic Coast Conference midweek opponent when it faces N.C. State Tuesday at Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte.

First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. at the home of the Triple-A Charlotte Knights. N.C. State is serving as the home team.

It'll be Davidson's fourth all-time game at the ballpark, and the Wildcats are 2-1 there. They split two games with Winthrop (2017, 2019) and beat No. 10 Duke 7-6 on a walk-off home run in 2020.

Earlier this season, Davidson defeated Western Carolina 6-5 at Atrium Health Ballpark, home of the Single-A Kannapolis Cannon Ballers.

LATEST ON THE 'CATS
• Davidson enters 21-13 overall and has won two straight and six of its previous eight.
• The Wildcats secured an Atlantic 10 series victory Sunday with an 8-3 win over Dayton.
• Outfielder Ryan Wilson continues to set the standard in the A-10, leading the league with 14 home runs, a .515 on-base percentage, an .815 slugging percentage, a 1.330 OPS and 20 hit-by-pitches. He's second in the league with 42 RBIs and 46 runs scored.
• Outfielder Henry Koehler led the Wildcats at the plate in the Dayton series, hitting .583 (7-for-12) with two doubles, a triple, a home run and three RBIs. He finished the series with a 1.167 OPS.
• Left-hander Isaac Fix (2-0, 3.18 ERA) is slated to start Tuesday's game.

SERIES HISTORY
• Davidson and N.C. State first met on the diamond in 1903, Davidson's second season, and Tuesday's meeting will be the teams' 122nd.
• Davidson is seeking its 32nd win in the matchup and its first since a 7-5 win in Raleigh in 2000.
• The teams most recently met for a doubleheader in Raleigh on Feb. 21, 2021, with N.C. State winning 13-3 and 6-4.

SCOUTING THE WOLFPACK
• N.C. State is 24-11 and enters on a four-game win streak, including a weekend ACC sweep of Florida State, completed with a 5-4 win Sunday when Dominic Pilolli delivered a walk-off RBI-single in the 10th inning.
• Eli Serrano III leads the Wolfpack with a .343 average, while LuJames Groover III and Jacob Cozart are hitting .338 and .336, respectively. On Monday, Groover, a third baseman, was named ACC Player of the Week and Perfect Game National College Player of the Week after he hit .600 (9-for-15) with three homers during the Wolfpack's 4-0 week.
• Two Wolfpack outfielders will look very familiar to Wildcat fans. Davidson graduates Trevor Candelaria and Parker Nolan (of the 2022 class) are now wearing Wolfpack red and playing in right and center fields, respectively. Candelaria is hitting .302 with 10 doubles, five home runs and 27 RBIs, while Nolan is tied with Payton Green for the team lead with eight homers to go with eight doubles, 24 RBIs and a .291 average. Candelaria and Nolan combined for 266 starts as Wildcats and were each on the A-10 First Team last season.
• Right-hander Baker Nelson (5-2, 5.17 ERA) will start for the Wolfpack.
