DAVIDSON, N.C. – Grant Huffman scored a game-high 14 points and handed out 5 assists to lead Davidson past USC Upstate, 62-59, in non-conference men's basketball action Thursday evening inside John M. Belk Arena.
Winners of six straight, the 'Cats improve to 9-3 overall, while the Spartans fall to 4-8.
Huffman, who also hauled in 5 boards, was joined in double figures by Bobby Durkin (11), Connor Kochera (10) and David Skogman (10).
Tied 48-48 with 7:35 to play, the 'Cats broke the deadlock and went back into front for good with consecutive layups from Durkin and Huffman.
Davidson would eventually go back up by seven, 60-53 on a Reed Bailey layup with 1:35 to play, but was unable to put the game out of reach. The Spartans used back-to-back treys to cut the deficit to one with 17 ticks remaining before a pair of Durkin free throws secured things.
Floyd Rideau, Jr. and Trae Broadnax were the lone Spartans to crack the 10-point plateau with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
After a back-and-forth start the two teams traded runs, including a 16-3 streak by the Wildcats to close the half and take a 33-27 advantage into the locker room. Davidson pushed the margin to as many as 10 early in the second half before Upstate started to slowly chip away.
Both teams shot 41 percent from the floor. The Wildcats finished 14-of-20 at the charity stripe, while the Spartans managed to make just six of their 12 tries.
