Wildcats Lose in 1-0 Heartbreaker vs. Loyola Chicago

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson college women's soccer team fell in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Loyola Chicago Sunday at Alumni Stadium.Â
The entirety of the first half was a back-and-forth defensive battle that saw the Ramblers take five shots with two on goal and the Wildcats take two shots of their own, placing one on target.Â
Davidson had a chance in the 17th minute to get on the scoreboard first when Aleia Gisolfi-McCready was fouled in the box, giving way for a Riley Patton penalty kick. However, the penalty was successfully defended by Loyola Chicago goalkeeper Naya Lipkens en route to a 0-0 tie at halftime.Â
Coming out of the break, the battle between both squads continued as they played almost identical with five total shots apiece. The Ramblers threatened by way of four total corner kicks in the second half, but Emily Smith and the 'Cats defense were able to shut down any scoring attempts.Â
With time dwindling down in the 89th minute, Zoe Hevey played an up and over touch that lofted out of reach of Smith and to the foot of Maggie Schmidt who netted the games loan goal to seal a 1-0 Loyola Chicago win.Â
The loss moves Davidson's record to 3-10-1 overall and 0-6-1 in Atlantic 10 competition while the Ramblers become 6-6-2 overall and 2-2-2 in league play.Â
For the game, Loyola held advantages in shots (10-7), shots on goal (6-3) and corner kicks (8-3).Â
