Wildcats to Meet VCU in Friday's A-10 Semifinals

5/26/2022 12:34:00 PM | Baseball

DAVIDSON — The top two baseball teams in the Atlantic 10 standings, Davidson and VCU, will square off in Friday's championship semifinals at Wilson Field.

First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. on the fourth day of the five-day, seven-team event hosted by the Wildcats.

Top-seeded Davidson (43-11) advanced into the semifinals after a first-round bye and a 6-2 win over No. 5 George Mason on Wednesday. Second-seeded VCU (38-18) has earned two wins in the tournament — a 4-3 win over No. 7 Richmond Tuesday night and an 8-4 win over Saint Joseph's Wednesday.

The Wildcats and Rams were idle Thursday as four teams — Saint Joseph's, Saint Louis, Richmond and George Mason — battled to join them in the final three. Third-seeded Saint Louis and No. 7 Richmond will now play the first game Friday after inclement weather postponed Thursday's nightcap.

LAST TIME OUT
Against Mason, Freshman Jacob Friend had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in four runs as the Wildcats topped the Patriots for the third time in four games.

Trevor Candelaria hit his 13th home run, a two-run blast, and Jacob Hinderleider turned in his fourth straight two-hit game, extending his hit streak to 20 games.

Nolan DeVos and Bennett Flynn combined for the effort on the mound, allowing six hits and one earned run and punching out 10.

SCOUTING THE RAMS
VCU is on a tear as it enters Friday on a 13-game win streak, the third longest in the nation. The Rams have also won 14 straight A-10 games, the best conference run in the country.

VCU features two A-10 First Team selections in first baseman Tyler Locklear and second baseman Ben Nippolt.

Locklear, in particular, is one of the premier A-10 hitters — and last year's league MVP — and leads the league with 71 RBIs. He's hit 17 home runs to go with a .387 average and 23 doubles, and his 1.295 OPS is second only to Player of the Year Michael Carico.

Nippolt is hitting .318, and Second Team pick Will Carlone, the designated hitter, is hitting .288. Locklear and Nippolt each homered in the Rams' win over Saint Joseph's.

FAMILIAR FOES
Like every other team in the tournament, the Wildcats played VCU during the regular season. The Wildcats won two of three games at VCU April 8-10 in the second A-10 series.

The Rams rallied to win the opener 7-6, while the Wildcats won the next two games by a 7-2 score.

To highlight the series for Davidson, Parker Nolan hit a three-run home run in the first win and a two-run triple in the second. Pitcher Blake Hely threw seven innings of one-hit, one-run ball and struck out eight in the first win.
