DAVIDSON — After playing 12 straight games at Wilson Field, the Davidson baseball team will step away for the first time this season Tuesday when the Wildcats host Appalachian State at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis.
Game time is set for 6 p.m. at the home of the Low-A Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, with Davidson serving as the home team.
"We love the opportunity to play at Kannapolis," said coach Rucker Taylor. "It's a local community that supports its team and has welcomed Davidson with open arms. The ballpark is incredible, and we are glad that the Cannon Ballers have embraced us. Operating Partner Scotty Brown and the rest of the staff make this feel like a second home for us."
Tuesday marks the second official contest the Wildcats have played at the ballpark, and they also played a fall game there against Duke.
Outfielder Trevor Candelaria said the playing conditions and hospitality make it "one of the nicest college baseball environments in the country. We feel very fortunate to have this game on our schedule and hope to capitalize on what should be some great weather tomorrow."
It'll be the 105th meeting between the old Southern Conference rivals and the first since 2017, when Davidson rallied from a 4-0 deficit to win 12-6 at Wilson Field. That day, Will Robertson and Brian Fortier combined for seven hits, including two home runs, and seven RBIs.
Davidson enters with a 9-3 record.
"We've pitched and played defense well this year," said Taylor. "Offensively we've seen some improvements and adjustments from guys, which is encouraging."
LAST TIME IN TOWN
On March 31, 2021, the Wildcats built a 7-1 lead and held on for a 7-6 win over Wofford at Atrium Health Ballpark.
Ryan Wilson hit a three-run homer, and John Hosmer hit a solo blast as the Wildcats took control in the fourth inning. The fifth included an RBI-double from Ruben Fontes and a Candelaria two-RBI single before the Terriers scored five runs in the eighth to get within a run.
But Nolan DeVos pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning on 11 pitches to end it and earn the save.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
Appalachian enters 5-6 after taking two of three games against UNCW in Boone over the weekend.
In Saturday's 12-11 win, the Mountaineers scored four runs in the eighth and four in the ninth and won when Andrew Terrell scored on a wild pitch.
Hayden Cross is the Mountaineers' top hitter by average, hitting .400 with a .990 OPS, four doubles and seven RBIs.
LAST TIME OUT
The Wildcats are coming off a four-game series split with Columbia, which culminated with a 6-4 win Sunday afternoon.
Candelaria homered, doubled and drove in three runs, while John Hosmer drove in two with an RBI-single.
Lefty Ryan Feczko improved to 3-0, while covering 5.2 innings and striking out nine. Gabe Levy recorded the final four outs and earned his fifth save.
