Wildcats Renew Rivalry at Charlotte Wednesday
3/22/2022 3:51:00 PM | Baseball
Having won nine straight, the Davidson baseball team will hit the road for the first time Wednesday when the Wildcats visit cross-county rival Charlotte.
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Charlotte's on-campus Hayes Park. The game was originally scheduled for Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte but was moved from the pro park due to potential inclement weather.Â
Â
It'll be the first matchup on the diamond between the Wildcats and 49ers since May 4, 2004, when the Wildcats won 3-1 in 10 innings.
Â
"We're happy to have Charlotte back on the schedule and plan to make it a yearly opponent," said Davidson coach Rucker Taylor, whose team is now a program-best 17-3. "They will be a talented club and seem to be playing well."Â
Â
SCOUTING THE 49ERS
Charlotte is 13-6 entering a Tuesday night contest against Campbell at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis.
Â
The 49ers opened Conference USA play this past weekend, going 2-1 against Western Kentucky with 3-1 and 13-12 victories Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Â
Nate Furman (.408) and Austin Knight (.380, 6 HRs, 17 RBIs) are the top offensive threats.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Wildcats are coming off a three-game series sweep of Lafayette, having outscored the Leopards 37-12.
Â
Named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for the second straight week, first baseman Ryan Wilson leads the nation with a .622 on-base percentage and the A-10 with 23 walks. He's hitting a team-best .458 with four home runs, 21 runs and a team-high 10 steals.
Â
Michael Carico is also hitting north of .400 at .426, while leading the Wildcats with 10 doubles, six home runs and an .838 slugging percentage.
Â
Trevor Candelaria is hitting .375 with a team-leading 25 RBIs, and Henry Koehler has been hot of late. Against Lafayette, he hit .750 (9-for-12) with three doubles, a home run and eight RBIs.
