Fenton Tosses Gem, 'Cats Homer to Cap Series Sweep

Right-hander Alex Fenton set the tone on the mound, and the Wildcats did some damage with the bats as well in a 5-0 victory over North Alabama Saturday afternoon at Wilson.
Â
The win capped the Wildcats' fourth series sweep of the year and extended their win streak to seven games. Additionally, Davidson has won 11 of its last 12 and 18 straight at Wilson, dating to the 2020 season. The home winning streak ranks second nationally behind only Wright State (22), which is idle this weekend.
Â
Fenton threw seven innings, scattering five hits and striking out six. He retired eight consecutive batters in one stretch and didn't allow multiple baserunners in any inning after surrendering back-to-back bloop singles in the first.
Â
"Alex was excellent today," said Davidson coach Rucker Taylor. "He had tough luck in the first, but (second baseman) Jacob Hinderleider made a great play to keep them off the board. From there, Alex was in control. Jacob Walker and Will Schomberg came in and finished the deal."Â
Â
Alex Fedje-Johnson and John Hosmer homered as part of a four-run fifth inning to provide the bulk of the offense. Fedje-Johnson's three-run shot to left tied Hosmer and Ruben Fontes for the team lead with five home runs, but only momentarily. Two batters later, Hosmer's solo blast made it 5-0.
Â
"Fedje-Johnson and Hosmer had big swings," said Taylor. "Fedje's really gave us some separation and Hoz's was the culmination of a great at-bat."Â
Â
Fedje-Johnson and Hosmer also worked together to produce the Wildcats' first-inning run. With two outs and Trevor Candelaria at the plate, Hosmer broke for second on a steal attempt. He was eventually caught in a rundown and tagged out, but not before Fedje-Johnson scored from third.
Â
Fedje-Johnson, Hosmer and Henry Koehler finished the day with two hits apiece.
Â
The Wildcats' other series sweeps came against Toledo (Feb. 27-28), Spring Hill (March 19-21) and Seton Hall (March 26-28).
