Wildcats Take Both Games of Friday Doubleheader
4/10/2021 12:19:00 AM | Baseball
Gabe Levy tossed a series-opening gem, and three Wildcats homered in the nightcap as Davidson swept a doubleheader of seven-inning games over Dayton Friday evening at Wilson Field.
Â
The Wildcats (18-9) won their Atlantic 10 Conference opener 2-1, then followed it with a 10-8 victory, extending their win streak to nine games. Additionally, Davidson has won 13 of its last 14 and also 20 straight at Wilson, dating to the 2020 campaign.
Â
"Gabe got us off to a great start with his start," said Davidson coach Rucker Taylor. "We scratched for some runs in Game 1 and then had better at-bats in Game 2."Â
Â
Game 1
Levy efficiently threw all seven innings to earn his fourth victory of the year, scattering four hits and striking out five, while not issuing a walk. He worked 1-2-3 innings in the first, fourth and fifth innings.
After surrendering a Marcos Pujols solo home run to start the seventh, he struck out the next two batters and forced a flyout to left to end it.
Â
The Wildcats scored both runs in the fifth when Jacob Hinderleider reached on an error, and Trevor Candelaria and Henry Koehler scored on the play, with help from a second error.
Â
Hinderleider had the only extra base hit for the Wildcats in the game, a double in the third.
Â
Game 2
A 3-0 first-inning deficit did little to deter the Wildcats in the encore, as Davidson scored 10 runs from the second to fifth innings, then relied on its bullpen to shut the door late.
Â
"Collectively, the pitchers did a nice job in Game 2 and gave us a chance to respond to their early lead," said Taylor. "We turned some nice double plays, and Hindy made a great play at the end to finish things off."Â
Â
Before Hinderleider ended the game by fielding a grounder, tagging the runner headed to second and firing to first for the final out, he got the Wildcats on the board with a two-run home run in the second.
Â
Ruben Fontes hit a two-run shot to tie the game 4-4 in the third, and Parker Nolan's solo blast three batters later gave the Wildcats the lead they never lost. Fontes, Michael Carico and Hinderleider then all drove in runs with doubles, and the Wildcats led 10-4 after five.
Â
The combo of Bennett Flynn and Nolan DeVos combined for the final five outs, with Flynn working out of a sixth-inning jam with two strikeouts and DeVos pitching the seventh and earning his sixth save. Â
