Hely, Hosmer Lead 'Cats Past UConn

CONWAY, S.C. — Right-hander Blake Hely tossed a gem, and John Hosmer hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season Saturday to propel Davidson past UConn 4-3 at Coastal Carolina's Baseball at the Beach event.
The Wildcats improved to 5-4 entering Sunday's finale against Miami (Ohio), and the win came one day after a loss to the host Chanticleers.
"We've talked for the last year about 'responding,'" said coach Rucker Taylor. "I thought we responded really well today on short rest against a good team. Our energy level was great. Getting out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the first inning was huge."
After the first three batters of the game reached, Hely settled in and retired the next 12 and 14 of the next 15. In all, he threw seven innings, struck out six and allowed five hits. Both runs that crossed the plate on his watch were unearned.
"Blake was exceptional," said Taylor. "That was a big start, and he might have finished the game if we'd played a little better defense."
Nolan DeVos entered in the eighth and held the Huskies at bay over the final two innings, recording the save.
"Nolan pitched with a lead and did a nice job at the end," said Taylor. "Offensively, there were a lot of positives and some things we can continue to improve upon."
Hosmer's homer to left came in the sixth inning, and the two-run shot made it 4-2. He was also involved in the Wildcats getting a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Davidson loaded the bases with a Ruben Fontes single, Trevor Candelaria being hit-by-a-pitch and Parker Nolan reaching on a bunt single. Michael Carico then brought in Fontes with a walk before Hosmer hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Candelaria.
