Haney's Hit Helps 'Cats Complete Seton Hall Sweep
3/28/2021 3:49:00 PM | Baseball
Joe Haney's RBI-single broke a seventh-inning tie and lifted the Davidson Wildcats to a 3-2 win and a series sweep of Seton Hall Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Â
The win is the Wildcats' 15th straight at home.
Â
Haney's hit was the third single in a two-out string of them, with the freshman following John Hosmer and Ruben Fontes with base hits and plating Hosmer for the go-ahead run.
Â
"Our at-bats got better as the weekend progressed, and we made some collective adjustments," said coach Rucker Taylor. "Joe came into the game under unique circumstances and came through with a big at-bat late. We had a lot of different guys contribute this weekend, and it's encouraging to see guys step up and perform."Â
Â
Less than 14 hours after delivering a walk-off RBI-double against the Pirates, Alex Fedje-Johnson hit a leadoff home run Sunday to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead. His shot to right-center was his fourth of the year, tying him for the team lead with Fontes, Hosmer and Trevor Candelaria.
Â
The Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0 when Ryan Wilson singled in Fedje-Johnson in the third. The Pirates responded with two runs off two hits in the sixth, setting the stage for another Davidson response. Only this time, for the first time in four home games, it wasn't a walk-off.
Â
Alex Fenton threw six innings, allowing two earned runs and four hits while striking out three in a no-decision. Jacob Walker (1.1 IP), Bennett Flynn (0.2) and Nolan DeVos (1.0 IP) combined to keep the Pirate bats quiet the rest of the way.
Â
"Today, and the whole weekend, we pitched really well and didn't give away many free bases," said Taylor. "Even in today's weather conditions, we played clean. That was a good sign for us."Â
Sunday's game was suspended for 14 minutes in the fifth inning due to rain in the area.
