Nolan's Grand Slam Caps Weekend Sweep of Spring Hill

3/21/2021 3:02:00 PM | Baseball

Parker Nolan's walk-off grand slam capped a six-run ninth-inning rally and lifted Davidson to an 8-5 win and series sweep over Spring Hill Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Nolan's shot to left with no outs was his first career grand slam and walk-off homer.

"Getting up there, I was not trying to do anything crazy," he said. "I was just trying to plate another run."

He swung on a 3-1 fastball, drove it to the left field hill and cleared the bases.

"I just kinda reacted," he said.

Davidson entered the ninth trailing 5-2, but with the top of the order due. Alex Fedje-Johnson was hit by a pitch, and Henry Koehler beat out a bunt single. Ryan Wilson's double to right-center made it 5-4, and Ruben Fontes singled behind him. Trevor Candelaria was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for Nolan.

"Parker capped the last game with a great swing," said coach Rucker Taylor. "That inning was a lot of little things done right. Standing tough and taking HBPs, a good bunt, splitting a gap backside and finally backspinning a ball out."

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the first when Candelaria was hit with the bases loaded and cut into Spring Hill's 4-1 lead in the sixth when Michael Carico scored on a passed ball.

Alex Fenton got the start and threw 5.2 innings before handing the ball to the bullpen. Will Schomberg (2.1 IP) and Nolan DeVos (1.0 IP) took it from there.

"The pitching staff threw a lot of strikes this weekend and didn't allow too many free bases," said Taylor. "Outside of a couple of plays, we handled the ball well defensively and made a couple of nice plays."
