DURHAM — An early Davidson lead was short-lived Tuesday afternoon at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, as No. 25 Duke overtook the Wildcats 7-3 in the teams' first meeting since last year's dramatic Davidson win.
With the loss, Davidson falls to 4-3 overall.
The Wildcats got on the board in the second inning on a John Hosmer sacrifice fly to center that scored Trevor Candelaria and took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the third.
Ryan Wilson reached on a fielder's choice, advanced on Henry Koehler's single and an errant pick-off throw and scored on a wild pitch, tying it at 2-2. Fedje-Johnson then singled in Koehler, making it 3-2.
But the Blue Devils responded quickly with a four-run third inning, including back-to-back home runs from Peter Matt and RJ Schreck.
Hosmer, a junior infielder from Charlotte, now leads the Wildcats with nine RBIs. Fedje-Johnson now has eight, along with Ruben Fontes.
In his first college start, Jacob Peaden threw three innings, striking out six and surrendering six runs, before handing the ball to the bullpen. Jake Biederman (3.1 IP, 1 ER, 2 hits) and Jacob Walker (1.2 IP, 1 hit) covered the final five frames.
Up Next
The Wildcats return to the road for their next three games. They'll play in Coastal Carolina's Baseball at the Beach event in Conway, S.C., March 5-8 and face the host Chanticleers at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
