Back at Home, Baseball Hosts Spring Hill This Weekend
3/18/2021 4:06:00 PM | Baseball
After playing its last eight games away from Wilson Field, the Davidson baseball team returns home Friday for a three-game weekend series against Spring Hill College (Ala.).
Friday's first pitch is set for 6 p.m., and it's the Wildcats' first home game since a 16-14 walk-off 11-inning win over Toledo Feb. 28.
"This is the most we've been on the road early since I've been here," said coach Rucker Taylor. "COVID drastically altered our schedule, but we feel fortunate to be able to play. This time last year, we didn't have these opportunities."
Since sweeping Toledo, the Wildcats played at Duke (March 2), played three games at Coastal Carolina's Baseball at the Beach event (March 5-7) and visited The Citadel (March 12-14).
Then came a trip to South Carolina Wednesday night that resulted in a 9-4 win over the No. 16 Gamecocks.
"We've played some talented teams at some of the best venues in college and minor league baseball," said Taylor. "We wanted to play and play in good places for the guys that didn't get a full college season last year, or the freshmen who didn't get a high school or travel season. There's probably been some value as a team to be able to spend time together. Our staff hopes these early road challenges will help this team and this program moving forward."
Last time out
Davidson scored five runs in the third inning and earned the 9-4 win over the Gamecocks, the team's first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 10 Duke on March 10, 2020.
Alex Fedje-Johnson, Henry Koehler and Parker Nolan had two hits apiece, while Ryan Wilson, Michael Carico and John Hosmer drove in two runs each. Trevor Candelaria's solo home run to left in the sixth inning was his fourth of the season.
Five Wildcat arms — Jake Biederman, Will Schomberg, Jacob Walker, Bennett Flynn and Nolan DeVos — combined for nine innings of work.
Familiar foe
Former Wildcat Walker Imwalle now plays for Spring Hill College as a graduate student.
A first baseman/pitcher, Imwalle played in 50 games as a Wildcat and graduated last May.
So far this season, Imwalle is hitting .286 with two home runs, a triple and eight RBIs.
