DAVIDSON — Two games, two wins.

That's how the Davidson baseball team opened the 2020 season Saturday with a home doubleheader sweep of the Lehigh Mountain Hawks at Wilson Field.

With two strong pitching outings and some timely hitting, the Wildcats posted 5-4 and 10-2 victories and will look for the series sweep at noon Sunday.

"Good day against two really good starting pitchers from Lehigh," said coach Rucker Taylor. "With the exception of one of the 18 innings, we defended at a high level. Gabe Levy and Blake Hely threw a ton of strikes. When you're doing that and playing defense you'll be in most games. Offensively, we did a great job of defending the plate with two strikes in game one. In game two, we controlled the zone a little better and were able to get some guys on that way. Good start, but a lot of things we can do better. Good for a lot of guys to get their first collegiate experience today."

Senior infielders Alex Fedje-Johnson and Walker Imwalle led the solid defensive effort. They converted six inning-ending 5-3 putouts on the day.

Game 1
Sophomore pitcher Gabe Levy set the tone on the mound, and Davidson built a five-run lead before holding off Lehigh 5-4.

Levy, who recorded 11 saves a year ago, threw seven innings and struck out 10, while allowing five hits and two unearned runs.

Imwalle got Davidson's scoring started with a two-run triple off the left field wall in the second inning. Imwalle, who is 6-foot-5, is known for his power more than his speed and narrowly missed a home run. The last time he had a triple?

"Summer ball two years ago," he said.

But Imwalle felt he could get there Saturday and slid head first into third base, as Taylor guided him from the third base coaching box.

"I was rounding second, and (left fielder Jake Kochmansky) was picking the ball up, so I figured, 'Let's go for it,'" said Imwalle. "It's definitely not what I expected my first hit of the season to be."

Senior Zach Nussbaum drove in Imwalle with a groundout to short to make it 3-0.

The Wildcats added two runs in the 5th with a Parker Nolan RBI-triple and a Ruben Fontes RBI-single.

Freshmen Will Schomberg (1.1) and Jacob Peaden (0.2) pitched the final two frames to close it out, with Peaden getting the save.

Game 2
Davidson plated seven runs in the first three innings, highlighted by Jacob Hinderleider's bases-clearing double in the third, to take control in a 10-2 victory.

Sophomore Blake Hely scattered four hits and struck out four in six scoreless innings on the mound to keep the Mountain Hawks at bay.

Fedje-Johnson drove in two runs, including one on a single in the seventh, and freshman Garrett Browder had an RBI-single in the second. Ruben Fontes drove in a run with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the third, while Trevor Candelaria, Hinderleider and Matt Frey plated runs with sacrifice flies.

Freshman Nolan DeVos pitched the final three innings to earn the save.
