THE BRONX, N.Y. — Casey Sutherland threw eight scoreless innings and Eric Jones homered to propel Davidson to a 2-0 win over Saint Louis Wednesday on the opening day of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Fordham's Houlihan Park.
Â
With the win, No. 2 Davidson advances to face No. 3 Dayton at 10 a.m. Thursday.
Â
"You want to win the first game," said coach Rucker Taylor, whose team improved to 27-20. "Both teams played well. Saint Louis is a program we have a lot of respect for."
Â
Sutherland, named to the A-10 second team this week, continued his stellar senior campaign and improved to 8-1. He allowed six hits and struck out seven to put the Wildcats in prime position.
Â
"Casey was very good today," said Taylor, who also credited an errorless defensive performance led by shortstop Max Bazin and catcher Zach Nussbaum. "He was in the zone all day and pitched to the ballpark."
Â
Sutherland turned in 1-2-3 innings in the first, fourth and eighth.
Â
"I went in feeling pretty confident, and the first few innings, I got sharper and sharper," he said.
Â
Jones provided the offensive highlight with a solo homer to right field on the first pitch he saw in the fifth to make it 2-0. It was his eighth shot of the year.
Â
"I got every piece of that one," said Jones, who flied out to the wall in his first at-bat. "I thought I got the first one."
Â
Davidson took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Bazin drew a walk with the bases loaded. With two outs, Justin Lebek and Ruben Fontes singled, and Trevor Candelaria walked to set the table.
Â
Freshman Gabe Levy, an A-10 all-rookie pick, recorded the final three outs and earned his ninth save. He entered after Sutherland walked Jake Garella to lead off the ninth.
Seventh-seeded Saint Louis (25-29) will play No. 6 Rhode Island in an elimination game Wednesday night.
Â
Up Next
Davidson and Dayton will meet for the first time this season. Dayton (30-24-1) advanced with a 5-2 win over Rhode Island in the tournament's first game.
