THE BRONX, N.Y. — Davidson's Eric Jones and Justin Lebek hit home runs Thursday morning, but Dayton prevailed 7-3 over the Wildcats on the second day of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament at Fordham's Houlihan Park.
Â
Now the second-seeded Wildcats (27-21) will play No. 6 Rhode Island (24-28) in an elimination game at 5 p.m. Thursday, while No. 3 Dayton (31-24-1) advances to Friday's semifinals.
Â
Jones, who was the only A-10 player to homer Wednesday, hit a solo shot to left center Thursday to lead off the bottom of the third. His ninth round-tripper of the season tied the game at 1-1.
Â
Lebek went deep, also to left center, in the sixth for his 11th home run to cut Dayton's lead to 3-2.
Â
The Wildcats' third run came across with two outs in the ninth when Alex Mardiney scored on a passed ball. Â
Â
Dayton took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a safety squeeze play, as Eddie Pursinger scored on a bunt by Ben Blackwell.
Â
The Flyers moved ahead 2-1 in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Eddie Pursinger and 3-1 on a sixth-inning solo shot by Riley Tirotta. They made it 5-2 on Alex Brickman's two-RBI single in the eighth and made it 7-2 in the ninth with RBI-singles from Jay Curtis and Bryce Hellgeth.
Davidson righthander Allen Barry had a career-high 10 strikeouts. He threw six innings and allowed three earned runs and six hits.
Â
Up Next
It's a quick turnaround for the Wildcats, who won two of three games against Rhode Island in April. The game will be the first of the day for the Rams, who had a long day Wednesday. They lost to No. 3 Dayton 5-2 in the 10 a.m. game, then survived 2-1 against No. 7 Saint Louis in a 10-inning game that ended after midnight.
