ROCK HILL, S.C. — Ruben Fontes hit his 10th home run of the season to help Davidson build a three-run lead Tuesday night at Winthrop, but the Wildcats were held scoreless from there in a 9-3 loss to the host Eagles.
Â
The loss is the sixth straight for the Wildcats, who are now 14-13. Winthrop improved to 18-14 with its second win over Davidson this season.
Â
Matt Frey's RBI-single in the second inning gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead and also marked the 22nd straight game the junior second baseman has reached base. A sacrifice fly by Alex Mardiney in the third inning made it 2-0 before Fontes, the Atlantic 10Â home runs leader, hit a solo shot to right to lead off the fourth. Â
Â
Winthrop scored its first run in the bottom of the inning, then took a 4-3 lead in the fifth, which included a two-run home run by Hunter Lipscomb. The Eagles added three runs in the seventh on four hits and an error and two more in the eighth on a hit and an error.
Â
Freshman right-hander Gabe Levy started on the mound and threw three shutout innings, striking out four and allowing two hits.
Â
Alex Fenton, Sam Reinertsen, Luke Burton, Casey Kruger, Austin Leonard and Kieran Casey pitched in relief.
