CHAPEL HILL — Justin Lebek hit his fifth home run of the season, and Jaret LaCagnina had a promising first start of 2019 in Davidson's 12-4 loss to North Carolina at Boshamer Stadium Wednesday evening.
Â
Lebek drove in all the Wildcats' runs in Davidson's first game in Chapel Hill since it won the 2017 NCAA Regional. His RBI-single in the first plated Alex Mardiney, who had reached on a walk, and gave Davidson (14-14) a 1-0 lead it held until the third.
Â
Then, with North Carolina (25-9) leading 10-1 in the sixth, Mardiney led off by reaching on an error. Ruben Fontes walked to bring up Lebek, who belted a home run to right center.
Â
In his first significant action of the season, the left-handed LaCagnina sat down the Tar Heels 1-2-3 in the first. He threw 2.2 innings and struck out four, while allowing three earned runs. The Wildcats used eight pitchers in relief.
Â
Like Lebek, Eric Jones also had two hits, including a double to left in the seventh.
Â
Matt Frey singled in the fourth to reach base for the 23rd straight game.
Â
Carolina scored four runs in the third — taking the lead on a two-RBI double by Michael Busch — and added five more in the fourth to take control.
Â
Up Next
Davidson returns to Atlantic 10 Conference play Friday when it opens a home series against Rhode Island at 6 p.m. at Wilson Field.
