ARLINGTON, Va. — Davidson's Casey Sutherland threw the first complete-game shutout of his career to highlight Saturday's doubleheader split with George Washington at Barcroft Park.

Sutherland's gem led the way in a 3-0 Wildcats' victory in the first game, while the Colonials earned a 6-5 win in the encore.

Davidson is now 18-16 overall and 7-4 in the Atlantic 10. George Washington (22-17) moved to 6-8 in the league.

In his seventh start of the season, Sutherland (6-0) struck out seven, while walking none and allowing six hits. It's the first complete-game effort by a Wildcat this season. He has now had four outings of at least seven innings this year, with all coming in his last five starts.

"Casey was excellent today," said head coach Rucker Taylor. "He threw a lot of early-count strikes and forced the action. He knew with the wind today, it was going to be tough for both sides to drive the ball, and he used that to his advantage. Very impressive performance today, and he had a good defense behind him."

The senior right-hander from Apopka, Fla., entered Saturday leading the country in walks per nine innings (0.66) with three walks in 40.2 innings, then lowered that number to 0.54. He also improved on his fourth-best national ranking in strikeout-to-walk ratio (12.0 to 14.33).

A two-RBI single by Eric Jones gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the third inning, and Davidson added a run in the ninth on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Fedje-Johnson.

In the second game, Davidson trailed 6-2 before threatening with a ninth-inning rally, as the Colonials looked for answers with three relief pitchers in the final frame.

The Wildcats loaded the bases with no outs, with walks by Matt Frey and John Hosmer bookending a Brett Centracchio double, and Max Bazin drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Jones followed with an RBI-single to make it 6-4, and Alex Mardiney's walk loaded the bases for Ruben Fontes. His groundout to third made it 6-5, and the Colonials opted to intentionally walk Justin Lebek with two outs. Keagan McGinnis then struck out Trevor Candelaria to end it.

Davidson starter Allen Barry (4-2) threw six innings and allowed three earned runs and eight hits, while striking out four and walking three.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Mardiney sacrifice bunt, and Hosmer's RBI-single in the seventh cut into a 3-1 Colonials' lead.

Jones, who is hitting a team-best .354, finished Saturday 4-for-9 with a double and three RBI.

Frey extended his reached-base streak to 29 games. He had an eighth-inning double in the opener and was hit by a pitch twice in the second game, to go with the ninth-inning walk. He's now been hit a team-leading 13 times this year, which already ranks sixth among the single-season marks in program history.
