'Cats Blank La Salle 6-0 to Extend Streak
3/23/2019 5:36:00 PM | Baseball
Ruben Fontes and Brett Centracchio homered, and Allen Barry and Dan Spear combined to pitch a shutout Saturday as Davidson beat La Salle 6-0 on a sunny day at Wilson Field.
The win is the sixth straight for the Wildcats, who enter Sunday's series finale in position to get their second consecutive weekend sweep.
Fontes' three-run home run to right center in the fifth inning extended Davidson's lead to 5-0 and was his first home run in 10 days. It also keeps him atop the Atlantic 10 Conference leaderboard with six. Fontes has been seeing mostly off-speed pitches at the plate recently, but he found a fastball to his liking.
"I felt like I'd been struggling a little bit and needed to stick to my approach," he said.
Centracchio led off the sixth with a home run to right. It's his fourth of the season, with all of them coming since the March 13 game against Winthop at Charlotte's BB&T Ballpark, when he and Fontes homered in the second inning.
Leadoff hitter Alex Mardiney had bunt singles in the fifth — he then scored on Fontes' home run — and the seventh. In the fifth, his bunt rolled to a stop just inside the third base line. His second bunt single found open grass between the pitcher and first baseman.
"He practices it a lot," said Fontes. "When he sees an opening for it, he tries to take advantage of it."
Davidson (12-6, 2-0 A-10) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth after Matt Frey led off with a double down the right field line and scored on Justin Lebek's double to left. Lebek scored when Max Bazin reached on an error.
On the mound, Barry tossed 5.2 innings, struck out five and allowed five hits to improve to 4-1.
"He was great," said Fontes. "He was throwing strikes, working his pitches well. And I just love his tempo."
Spear pitched the final 3.1 innings and earned his second save of the year. He struck out four, walked three and allowed two hits.
Defensively, center fielder Trevor Candelaria had a diving catch in left center to end a threat in the sixth, and third baseman Alex Fedje-Johnson slipped but recovered to hustle and catch a foul ball to loud cheers in the fifth.
