Trevor Candelaria and Brett Centracchio hit home runs, and Casey Sutherland led a shutdown performance from the mound as Davidson topped North Alabama 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Â
It's the second win in as many days for the Wildcats, who are 8-6 entering Sunday's series finale.
Â
"It's nice to play one game Friday, one game Saturday, feel that rhythm," said Centracchio, referencing the Wildcats' many weather-related schedule changes this season. "It's definitely a good win."
Â
Candelaria began the day's scoring with a solo shot to left field in the third inning. His second home run of the season landed in the pine needles just right of the foul pole, not far from where the freshman's first college home run — a grand slam vs. Towson — landed a month ago.
Â
"That guy is one of the hardest workers on the team, I know that," said Centracchio. "He's a great defensive center fielder — you know it's getting caught out there. When he gets the barrel on the ball, it's special."
Â
Matt Frey added an RBI-double in the third, and the Wildcats never relinquished the lead. A double by Ridge Watson drove in a run for North Alabama in the fourth, but Davidson quickly answered in the bottom half with Centracchio's solo home run to right. His second round-tripper of the season came three days after he hit one out of Charlotte's BB&T Ballpark against Winthrop and came on a third straight curveball.
Â
"I wasn't sitting on it, but I was expecting it," said Centracchio. "I saw it up and reacted."
Â
The Wildcats added two runs in the fifth when Justin Lebek drew a walk with the bases loaded and Centracchio drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right.
Â
Eric Jones continued his offensive surge with a 2-for-3 day, including a double and a triple. In the last seven games, he's hitting .538 (15-for-28) with a .929 slugging percentage and 26 total bases.
Â
In his second start, Sutherland threw six innings, allowed six hits and two runs and struck out four to improve to 2-0. Austin Leonard pitched the next 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and striking out two before Gabe Levy came on with one out and a runner on in the ninth and shut the door for his second save.
