DURHAM — Duke scored five runs in the third inning to take control Tuesday afternoon and handed Davidson a 7-3 loss at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

It's the first defeat of the year for the Wildcats (3-1), who swept Towson last weekend.

Duke (4-0) was an NCAA Super Regional team a year ago.

"Outside of one inning, I thought we pitched well," said Davidson coach Rucker Taylor. "I was pleased with our at-bats for the most part, as we saw some pretty good arms. Defensively, we left a few outs on the field, and we'll improve on that, starting tomorrow."

Max Bazin had two of Davidson's three hits, while Brett Centracchio drove in all three runs, including two on a double to left center in the eighth. With Davidson trailing 6-0 in the sixth, Centracchio's sacrifice fly plated Alex Mardiney.

Duke left-handed starter Bill Chillari didn't allow a hit in his 3.2 innings, and Bazin's single past first base in the sixth against Hunter Davis was the Wildcats' first.

The Blue Devils' third inning scoring began with a Rudy Maxwell RBI-double and was highlighted by Kyle Gallagher's three-run home run to left center.

Davidson left-handed starter Sam Reinertsen threw 2.2 innings and allowed four earned runs. Austin Leonard (1.1 innings), Dan Spear (2.0) and Pete Bloomberg (2.0) also saw time on the mound, with Spear having the most success. He struck out three and allowed three hits, without surrendering a run.

Rain and wet field conditions in Davidson forced the road trip to Durham for an originally scheduled home game. The Blue Devils, who are coached by former Wildcat player Chris Pollard ('96), will visit Davidson on March 26.
