DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite holding a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the lead into the eighth, Davidson baseball dropped its Sunday finale with Fordham at Wilson Field.
The 'Cats slip to 15-8 on the season, and 1-2 in Atlantic 10 action, while the Rams improve to 12-7-1, 2-1.
Starter Josh Hudson was pristine through six frames before a leadoff double from Fordham broke up his no-hit bid. Hudson scattered just two walks through seven innings and struck out four.
The contest cruised through the first five innings, lasting just 43 minutes as a pitching duel ensued. The Rams did take the early lead, capitalizing on a three-base throwing error and wild pitch.
Freshman Alex Mardiney recorded the first hit of the ball game in the fifth, singling through the left side and advancing as Acosta too singled down the left line. Senior Andrew Born drove in Mardiney via sacrifice fly, and Acosta took second on a passed ball.
After junior Justin Lebek walked and classmate Max Bazin bunt singled his way on, senior Cam Johnson worked a five-pitch walk to bring Acosta home and give Davidson the lead. Lebek and Bazin added insurance, each scoring on a single to shallow center field from sophomore Brett Centracchio.
After back-to-back walks and a sac bunt for the Rams to lead off the eighth, a groundout cut the lead to 4-2. A two-out double brought in the third run, and a single to left center tied the game.
Fordham stole the victory the following frame, using a squeeze play at the plate to bring home the winning run.
