BOISE, Idaho – Despite 21 points, including six second-half 3-pointers from Jon Axel Gudmundsson, Davidson fell to fifth-seeded Kentucky, 78-73,Thursday in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament at Taco Bell Arena.
 
Coming off its first-ever Atlantic 10 Tournament title, Davidson concludes the 2017-18 season 21-12 overall.
 
A sophomore from Grindavik, Iceland, Gudmundsson capped off an 11-5 spurt with his fourth trey of the half to cut the deficit to 44-41 with 12:41 to play. The 6-4 point guard drilled another less than four minutes later to tie the game, 52-52.
 
After trading buckets over the next several possessions, Kentucky (25-10) went on a 13-3 run to push the margin back to double figures with just under a minute remaining.
 
Kentucky (25-10), the SEC Champions, advance to the Round of 32 where they'll meet the winner of Arizona / Buffalo on Saturday.
 
Kellan Grady, the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, capped his sensational freshman campaign with 16 points, while A-10 Co-Player of the Year Peyton Aldridge added 12 and fellow senior Will Magarity scored 11.
 
Kentucky used a 17-4 streak midway through the opening period to break a 17-17 deadlock before going to the half up 34-24.
 
Kevin Knox paced Kentucky with a game-high 25 points, including a 9-of-11 effort at the line. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander contributed 19 points and also hit 9 free throws for the Wildcats, who finished 26-of-32 at the charity stripe.
 
Following a 10-of-34 (.294) showing from the floor in the first 20 minutes, Davidson shot 51.9 percent after intermission, including 8 treys, to conclude its 14th NCAA Tournament appearances at 39.3 percent.
 
In addition to a 36-28 advantage on the glass, Kentucky shot 51 percent without making a 3-pointer as the Wildcats went 0-of-6 from long range.
