ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Behind a stellar pitching outing from junior Evan Roberts and three multi-hit performers, sixth-seeded Davidson propelled themselves to victory over seventh-seeded George Mason, 6-3, Thursday on day two of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Billikens Sports Complex.
With the win, the 'Cats move to 29-23 on the season and have earned themselves a spot in the semifinals on Friday. The 29 wins matches a program record for single-season victories, first achieved in 2014.
Roberts tossed 7.2 innings, fanning a career-high eight and allowing just one walk. Veteran Westin Whitmire picked up his second save in as many games, earning his 12th on the year and now holds the program record for single-season saves.
Junior Alec Acosta had another strong day at the plate with two hits, including blasting his second long ball in as many games, and matched his career-high with four RBI. Sophomore Eric Jones and senior Jake Sidwell also collected two hits apiece.
Mason actually opened the scoring first, using a double and a triple back-to-back to get a run on the board. The 'Cats quickly tied things up, after sophomore Justin Lebek took a full-count walk, and advanced to third after Sidwell singled through the right side and capitalized on a throwing error to take second. Rookie Brett Centracchio then sent a screamer back up the middle to bring Lebek home.
The Patriots then took control again courtesy of a two-run homer in the fourth inning, but the lead was short lived once more.
After three straight innings of stranding two runners, the Wildcats finally cashed in, as sophomore Max Bazin was beaned and senior Will Robertson dropped a single into center field to put two on. Acosta then stroked the ball over the left field wall for his second round-tripper of the season to give the 'Cats the 4-3 lead that they would never relinquish.
Davidson added a run in the seventh as Lebek singled in Jones, and another in the eighth, as Centracchio reached on error and came home on a gap RBI single from Acosta.
Thanks to his fourth-inning single, Robertson now holds the all-time reached base streak at 47 games.
Davidson will face the winner of No. 1 VCU/ No. 4 George Washington Friday at 1:00 p.m ET/ Noon CT in the semifinals.
