ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Sixth-seeded Davidson baseball opened up Atlantic 10 Championship play in strong fashion, pulling off the upset over third-seeded St. Bonaventure 5-2 Wednesday morning at Billikens Sports Complex on the campus of Saint Louis University.
Veteran ace Durin O'Linger nearly went the distance, tossing 8.1 innings, before classmate Westin Whitmire came in to close things out and earn his 11th save of the season. He is now tied for the program record for single-season saves. Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year Aaron Phillips took the loss for St. Bonaventure, but still struck out nine in 6.1 innings.
On the offensive front, junior Alec Acosta led the way, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, including blasting his second ever career home run. Sophomore Eric Jones also went 2-for-4, as eight hitters in the Davidson lineup turned in at least one hit.
For the fourth time in their last seven games, the 'Cats started things off early, plating a run in the opening frame. After junior Cam Johnson and senior Will Robertson walked on a combined nine pitches, Acosta tried to sac bunt them over but ended up reaching by fielder's choice. Senior Brian Fortier then singled on a ball to shallow center to load the bases. Jones then took a five-pitch walk to bring Robertson home and get the 'Cats on the board.
The Bonnies quickly knotted things back up with a leadoff solo shot, but Davidson quickly regained the lead. Johnson walked for the second straight plate appearance, moved to second after Robertson was hit-by-pitch, and came home as Acosta pushed a screamer back up the middle.
Acosta added cushion again in the fifth after belting a moonshot over the left field wall, and the 'Cats scored twice more in the sixth to intensify the lead.
With two outs in the sixth, Johnson gap singled through the right side to bring home senior Jake Sidwell, who had earlier singled, also through the right side. Robertson then walked again to load the bases (freshman Brett Centracchio had earlier reached on a bunt fielder's choice), and Acosta brought in his third RBI of the day on a four straight balls.
St. Bonaventure cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh thanks a walk and double.
Davidson threatened in multiple innings, leaving the bases loaded in the first, sixth, seventh, and ninth frames.
Although he did not record a hit, Robertson still reached base via two walks and a hit-by-pitch, now tied for the longest reached-base streak in program history at 46 games.
Davidson will face the winner of No.2 Rhode Island/ No. 7 George Mason on Thursday, also slated for a 11:00 am ET/ 10:00 am CT start.
