AMHERST, Mass. – In their final game of the 2017 regular season, Davidson delivered dramatically, playing their third extra-inning contest in the last five games, to come out victoriously over Massachusetts 5-2 in 10 innings at Earl Lorden Field in Amherst.
The team finishes the regular season at 27-23 and 13-11 in the league. They will await the conclusion of Atlantic 10 play to learn their postseason fate.
The 'Cats collected nine hits in the outing, five of them coming in the 10th. Senior Will Robertson and sophomore Eric Jones each had two to lead the squad, and both played a role in the win. Robertson has now come within one of matching the program record for reaching base, currently at 45 straight games. Friday was also the first contest in ten games where the Wildcats did not homer.
Senior Jake Sidwell led off the final frame with a hard screamer down to second base, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Max Bazin. Sidwell then finally broke the blank, coming home on a ball dropped into left field from junior Cam Johnson. The squad then added cushion, after Robertson doubled home senior Tyler Agard, who had earlier boarded on a full-count walk. Freshmen Brett Centracchio then pinch hit, responding with a two-bagger of his own, bringing both Johnson and Robertson in. Jones then connected with a ball through the left side of the field, allowing Centracchio to plate more insurance.
The Minutemen weren't going to back down without a fight, avoiding the shutout courtesy of a two-run shot over right field.
The game was a stalemate for the first nine frames. The 'Cats biggest chance was in the sixth, when they left the bases loaded after Bazin singled, Robertson followed him, and junior Alec Acosta walked.
Davidson looked to threaten again in the ninth, after Acosta reached on an error and Fortier singled to put two on.
Rookie ZJ Zabinski earned his second-ever collegiate victory and his second in as many games. The combined pitching efforts of starter Evan Roberts and sophomore reliever Austin Leonard delivered eight and a third frames of scoreless ball, combining for five hits and seven strikeouts.
