DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson baseball team edged the Akron Zips, 5-4, in the final game of the weekend series Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field. Cody White notched his fourth save of the season for the Wildcats.
Davidson (9-5) headed into the ninth leading the Zips 5-4 when White stepped onto the mound. The sophomore pitcher got himself into a bit of trouble when his fourth pitch hit the leadoff batter. After a throwing error advanced the runner to third, White caught the next two batters looking and putout the final Zip at first to secure the contest for the Wildcats.
Akron (8-7) started the day scoring for the third-straight time in the first inning with a homerun. But Davidson quickly took the lead in the second inning off two runs on three hits with no Akron errors.
After the Zips tied the score at two in the third, Akron took a 4-2 lead in the fourth after a Davidson error.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that the Wildcats came alive, recording three-straight hits that scored three-straight runs, including the lone triple of the day by right fielder Lee Miller. Davidson completed the bottom of the fifth with three runs off three hits and no Akron errors to take the 5-4 lead.
Overall, the Wildcats out hit the Zips, 10-8, while committing four errors to Akron's none. Second baseman Sam Foy led all batters with two runs, two hits and a RBI in three at bats. Three other Wildcats recorded multiple hit performances.
On the mound, Nick Neitzel started the day off for Davidson, allowing three runs off five hits in three innings, before Josh Smutzer pitched the next four holding the Zips to just one run for the win. After Matt Saeta threw an inning, White came in for the save and completed the day striking out two of the four batters faced.
Three Akron pitchers took the mound. Pat Dyer pitched the first 1.1 innings before leaving the contest due to injury. Jon Pusateri took the loss for the Zips, allowing three runs on six hits and walking four.
The Wildcats will be back in action Tuesday, March 17 when they travel to UNC for a non-conference matchup at 3 p.m.
