DAVIDSON, N.C. – After falling behind 2-0 in the opening half, Davidson scored four unanswered goals early in the second half to rally past Cal Poly, 4-3, in both team's season opener Friday evening at Alumni Stadium.
With the win, the Wildcats extend their unbeaten streak in season openers to 16, which includes a 10-0-4 mark under head coach Matt Spear. Davidson (1-0-0), which hasn't dropped its first game of the season since 1998, is 33-20-6 all-time in openers.
The Mustangs' Matt LaGrassa netted the game's first goal in the 25th minute off a square ball from fellow midfielder Justin Dhillon.
Davidson's best chance in the period came from freshman Nathan Marder, who got free down the far side, but his right-footed attempt was struck directly at the Mustangs' keeper Wade Hamilton.
With just three seconds remaining in the first half, Cal Poly reserve Kaba Alkebulan gave his club a two-goal cushion when he put away a loose ball from just in front off a long free kick.
Christian Fechter sparked the Davidson comeback scoring the first of four straight for the 'Cats over a 19-minute and 16-second span to begin the second half.
Shortly after John Pace provided a 58th minute equalizer, sophomore Maxi Pragnell put away a rebound off a Valeriy Sviderskiy shot to give Davidson the lead for good.
Alan Reiter, who set up Pace's third career goal, scored the eventual game-winner at the 64:16 mark with a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box that curled around the wall inside the far post.
Davidson outshot the Mustangs 12-7 after intermission to finish with a 16-11 advantage. Both teams attempted four corner kicks.
Cal Poly (0-1-0) cut the deficit to one on Chase Minter's penalty kick with just over five minutes to play, but that's as close as it would get the rest of the way.
Hamilton led both goalkeepers with six saves, while Matt Pacifici stopped three shots for the Wildcats.
Davidson will continue its five-game homestand to begin the season with a 4 p.m. contest against Valparaiso Sunday afternoon.
