CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Davidson College men's soccer team played College of Charleston to a 1-1 draw Thursday night in its season opener at Ralph Lundy Field.
The Wildcats went down a score early in the contest, conceding a goal to Matt Lenert in the ninth minute.
In the final minute of the first half, Charles Frink equalized the game after collecting a pass from Garrett Wilkins and delivering a blistering strike from the top of the penalty box. Frink made his first appearance and first start for the Wildcats, scoring his first career goal. Wilkens was credited with his first career assist.
The 45th-minute score gave Davidson momentum that carried into the second half, as the Wildcats kept possession for most of the half. The Wildcats were given an additional advantage in the 83rd minute when a Charleston player was sent off with his second yellow card, giving Davidson a man up for the final seven minutes.
The 'Cats were unable to come away with a goal despite being up a man and defended a ferocious attack from the Cougars in the final two minutes. Goalkeeper Lucas Beltran made a crucial save in the final moments to keep the game tied at 1-all.
Davidson led the Cougars 8-7 in shots and 4-2 in corners. Beltran and Marten Brink made two saves apiece.
