Davidson and Valpo Play to Scoreless Draw

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite creating the better chances, Davidson concluded its opening weekend with a 0-0 draw against Valparaiso in non-conference men's soccer action on a hot and humid Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
The Wildcats move to 1-0-1 on the young season, while Valpo earns its second straight tie.
"The good news is that we remain undefeated and we earned a shut-out – nice for Goalkeeper Matt Pacifici on his Birthday," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "And defensively our chemistry made an important step forward."
"The soccer gods sure reversed things from our Friday match that featured seven goals. A 0-0 stalemate may have been an anticipated result with both teams fighting through the heat, humidity and second tough game in three days. The emphasis was on work rate and communication, and it was a brutal exercise to push and demand as much as possible from the guys."
Davidson's Shane Macnamara had the best scoring opportunity for either team in the opening half when he missed just wide in the fourth minute.
The Wildcats set up a number of chances late in regulation, including two from Jess Smith, but were unable to connect.
"On the attacking side, we lacked the precision needed to create more quality scoring opportunities. And we must not let fatigue be an excuse as it's a surmountable hurdle if we have the right mindset, movement, and technique. We will work on that, we will develop, and we will win more games."
Valpo finished with a 14-10 advantage in shots and 7-6 edge in corners.
"I give lots of credit to Valpo. They traveled from Indiana and shut out N.C. State on Friday night and Davidson on Sunday afternoon. That underlines how sound defensively they are and quality honors for their players and coaches," Spear commented.
Both keepers finished with three saves in 110 minutes of action.
Davidson will continue its five-game homestand to begin the 2014 season with a 7 p.m. kickoff against Jacksonville Friday evening.
