Sviderskiy Postgame Interview
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Goals from Alan Reiter and Valeriy Sviderskiy and strong team defense led Davidson past Jacksonville, 2-0, in non-conference men's soccer action Friday evening at Alumni Stadium.
With the win, the Wildcats remain unbeaten on the season improving to 2-0-1, while JU falls to 1-2-0.
"Super proud of the guys tonight," said head coach Matt Spear. "Quality performance and our effort and focus was very good."
After threatening with a couple of scoring chances early in the contest, Reiter put the 'Cats up 1-0 in the 29th minute with a blast from just outside the 18-yard box. Fellow midfielder Maxi Pragnell set up Reiter's second strike of the young season.
"Alan scored a clutch goal to give us the early lead."
Prior to intermission, Reiter intercepted a pass shy of midfield and played Sviderskiy in stride down the near side, but the forward's one-on-one attempt was hit right at Dolphin keeper Marc Meny.
Just under two minutes into the second half Davidson had another opportunity to extend its lead, but Shane Macnamara's right-footed rip caromed off the cross bar.
Sviderskiy, who finished with a game and career-high seven shots, including five on goal, finally broke into the scoring column in the 77th minute when he beat Meny just inside the far post off an assist from Macnamara.
"For much of the second half we were creating great scoring opportunities and pounding away with pressure and shots. But victory was not sealed until Valeriy finished it off," Spear said. "Excellent work rate as always by Shane, and some of his passes – including the assist on Val's goal – were superb."
The shutout was the second in as many games for Davidson's Matt Pacifici and fifth of his career.
"And the whole team – especially the defensive corps – take a lot of pride and momentum from shutouts."
The Wildcats finished with a commanding 19-8 advantage in shots, while Jacksonville held the edge in corner kicks, 7-5.
Davidson will enjoy a week away from action before continuing its five-game homestand to begin the 2014 season with a 7 p.m. contest against cross-county foe Belmont Abbey, Sept. 12.
