DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson will kick off its 2014 men's soccer season Friday with a 5:30 p.m. contest against Cal Poly at Alumni Stadium before concluding the opening weekend Sunday afternoon when Valparaiso visits 1992 Team Field for a 4 p.m. start.
The Wildcats are unbeaten in their last 15 regular season openers, including a 9-0-4 mark under the direction of head coach Matt Spear '93, who is in his 14th season at the helm. Davidson, which hasn't dropped its first game of the season since 1998, is 32-20-6 all-time in openers.
In addition to being picked to finish fifth out of 13 teams in the Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Preseason Poll, the Wildcats' Matt Reinikka was named to the all-rookie team, as voted on by the league's head coaches.
Davidson, which officially joined the A-10 in July, returns nine starters from last year's squad that finished 8-10-1 overall.
Valeriy Sviderskiy, who was named first-team all-conference last season, led the Wildcats in 2013 with eight goals and 16 total points. Fellow forward Maxi Pragnell tallied a pair of strikes and a team-leading six assists to earn a spot on the SoCon's all-freshman squad.
Kristian Garciamendez-Rowold, Shane Macnamara and Matt Pacifici also return and will serve as this year's team captains.
The Wildcats have never faced Cal Poly or Valpo on the pitch. Cal Poly, which played seventh-ranked California to a 1-1 draw in a preseason tune-up last week, finished the 2013 campaign 10-9-2, while Crusaders went 5-8-5.
Davidson will continue its five-match homestand to begin the 2014 campaign Sept. 5 when Jacksonville comes to town for a 7 p.m. contest.
