DAVIDSON, N.C. – Lucas Troutman recorded a double-double with 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead five Elon players in double figures, and the Phoenix erased a 14-point deficit late in the contest to defeat Davidson 87-85 in overtime Thursday evening at Belk Arena.
Trailing 53-49 following a Ryley Beaumont trey at the 13:53 mark, Davidson (7-11, 3-1 SoCon) went on a 23-5 streak to grab the largest lead of the night by either team, 72-58, with 5:49 to play. Elon outscored the Wildcats 16-2 over the final 4:27 of regulation, capped off by a Jack Isenbarger 3-pointer with two seconds left to force overtime.
After Elon (10-8, 3-1 SoCon) scored consecutive layups to begin the extra session, the Wildcats reeled off five unanswered including a De'Mon Brooks jumper in the lane to go up, 81-80, with 2:23 left. Troutman then started and ended a 7-2 Phoenix run to give his club an 87-83 lead, but Tom Droney went the length of the floor for a layup with two seconds remaining to make it a two-point game. Jake Belford then stole the inbounds pass and took a right-corner 3-pointer, reminiscent of a Davidson game at Elon in 2010 when Steve Rossiter (2005-10) nailed a game-winner in the same fashion. However, Belford's shot went halfway down before rimming out as the horn sounded.
Despite the setback, Brooks also posted a double-double, matching his career high of 28 points and adding 10 rebounds, to lead Davidson. Droney scored 15 points, while Tyler Kalinoski and Brian Sullivan added 13 and 12, respectively.
Prior to tonight's loss, Davidson had won 16 straight league games and 23 consecutive against conference foes at home.
Elon also got double digits from Beaumont (15), Isenbarger (15), Sebastian Koch (13) and Austin Hamilton (10).
The Phoenix shot 50.7 percent for the contest, while Davidson finished with a clip of 43.4 percent, making one less field goal.
Aside from big runs in each half, it was a back-and-forth game with 14 lead changes and 11 ties.
Elon opened the contest 14-of-20 from the floor, using a 15-4 run midway through the first half to take a 35-25 advantage. However, the Wildcats closed the period on a 12-2 spurt, highlighted by eight straight points from Brooks and a Sullivan jumper at the buzzer, to even things at the break, 37-37.
The Phoenix, who were winless (0-9) in Belk Arena prior to tonight, held a 46-32 advantage on the glass.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday with a 5 p.m. contest at UNCG inside the Greensboro Coliseum.
