WICHITA, Kan. – Cleanthony Early recorded a double-double with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 8/10 Wichita State past Davidson, 81-70, in non-conference men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Koch Arena.
Playing their fifth ranked opponent of the season, the Wildcats fall to 4-9 overall, while the Shockers remain unbeaten improving to 13-0.
Despite the loss, Tyler Kalinoski, a Kansas native, led four Davidson players in double figures with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including three treys to go along with six rebounds and six assists. Tom Droney added 12 points, while Jake Belford and De'Mon Brooks added 10 each.
Early, the Missouri Valley Preseason Player of the Year, finished 8-of-15 from the floor, 3-of-6 from long range and missed just one of his six free-throw attempts. Ron Baker went 12-of-14 from the line to score 15 points, while Darius Carter and Tekele Cotton had 13 and 10, respectively, for the Shockers.
After the Wildcats reeled off six unanswered points early in the second half to get to within one, 45-44, Wichita State slowly stretched the margin to double figures and put the game out of reach.
Off to its best start in school history, Wichita State shot 42.6 percent (23-54) overall and got to the charity stripe 41 times, connecting on 28 of them for a 68.3 percent clip.
The Wildcats also finished at 42 percent from the field, including 11 triples, while going 11-of-16 from the free-throw line.
Davidson used a 12-4 run capped off by consecutive 3-pointers from Droney and Belford to go up 32-31, but the Shockers scored the last five points of the opening period to take a 36-32 lead into the half.
The Shockers held a 39-35 edge on the glass and turned 15 Wildcat turnovers into 18 points at the other end.
Davidson returns home for a 2 p.m. New Year's Day tilt against former SoCon rival College of Charleston inside Belk Arena. The contest will be televised on both MI-Connection Channel 4 and CSS.
