Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman RHP Ryan Lowe struck out the final two batters to preserve an 8-7 victory for Davidson over USC Upstate in non-conference baseball action Tuesday night at Harley Park.

Trailing 8-5 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, USC Upstate (21-8) scored two runs to pull within one. With the tying run on third base and the winning run on first base with just one out, Lowe took the mound for Davidson (11-15) and struck out both batters he faced to earn his first career save.

The game had been halted for 31 minutes with one out in the top of the ninth inning due to rain.

Senior centerfielder Drew Gadaire led Davidson at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI and two runs scored. Six other Wildcats had an RBI each as all nine batters reached base at least once.

Left fielder Greg Guers led USC Upstate, going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run.

Davidson broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the seventh inning with strong hitting from the top of the order. Senior second baseman James Cerbie (1-for-4) led the inning off with a double to the left field corner, was sacrificed to third base by sophomore left fielder Forrest Brandt (1-for-4), and then driven home with a base hit to left field by Gadaire.

The Wildcats padded their lead with a pair of unearned runs in the eighth inning. Seniors Calvin Sigelbaum and Seth Freeman both reached base on base hits and moved into scoring position on a throwing error. A fielding error allowed Sigelbaum to score and Freeman scored when junior third baseman Andrew Barna (0-for-3) drew a bases loaded walk.

USC Upstate had erased a four-run deficit by scoring four unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners on second and third, a fielding error allowed both runners to score. Guers followed with a two-run home run over the right field wall to even the score at 5-5.

The Wildcats chased Spartan starter RHP David Palladino in the first inning, scoring four runs on two hits, four walks and a hit batsmen. Cerbie led the game off with a four-pitch walk and Brandt followed with a single up the middle to set the table for Gadaire, who drove in Cerbie from second base with a single up the middle for the game's first run.

Barna walked to load the bases, and after Palladino earned a strike out, Zeblo and sophomore right fielder Kelly Myers earned back-to-back walks to give Davidson a 3-0 lead. RHP Ben Augenstein then relieved Palladino and hit Sigelbaum with a pitch to plate Davidson's fourth run, but escaped the inning when Freeman lined into an unassisted double play by shortstop Brody Greer.

Third baseman Jordan Stampler drove in USC Upstate's first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly. Davidson went ahead 5-1 in the top of the fifth inning when Gadaire walked, stole second base, advanced to third on a fly-out to right field by Barna, and then scored on a perfectly-placed bunt single by senior designated hitter Jake Berman.

Senior RHP Brian Russell (3-4) entered the game in the sixth inning and struck out three in two perfect innings to earn the win. RHP Bryan DaCanal started for the 'Cats and surrendered five runs (all unearned) on seven hits and a walk with two strikeouts. RHP Clark Beeker retired the side in the eighth inning. RHP Matt Saeta allowed two runs (one earned) in the ninth inning.

L.J. Newman (0-1) took the loss, allowing the go-ahead run for Davidson in the seventh inning.
