GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman's Darryl Evans finished with a career-high 24 points as the Paladins shot 60 percent in the second half to take an 88-79 victory over Davidson in Southern Conference men's basketball action Saturday evening in Timmons Arena.
Nik Cochran led three Davidson (13-13, 7-8 SoCon) scorers in double figures with 18 points. Brendan McKillop and De'Mon Brooks both added 16 points, and Brooks led the 'Cats on the glass with seven rebounds. JP Kuhlman had seven assists to go along with six points and five rebounds.
Noah States and Jordan Miller (19-7, 11-4 SoCon) both scored 14 points for Furman. Colin Reddick finished with a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Amu Saaka added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Davidson used a 13-4 run to take a 57-54 lead with 8:00 remaining, but it was short lived as Furman used an 11-2 run to build a two-possession cushion they would not relinquish over the remaining five-and-a-half-minutes. The Paladins scored on their final 16 possessions and hit their last 13 free throws to secure the win.
The Wildcats were held to 38.8 percent shooting (16-for-44) for the game and struggled at the start, hitting just two field goals over the first 12 minutes of the contest. Furman built a 21-10 lead, but the 'Cats got hot and used a 20-0 run, led by a pair of McKillop three-balls to build a nine-point lead. It was the largest lead the 'Cats would hold as Furman went on a 16-7 run to close the half and tie the game at 37-37.
Furman built a seven-point lead on a 14-7 run to start the second half. Led by six points from Brooks, the Wildcats answered with the 13-4 run, but Furman's hot shooting down the stretch put the game out of reach.
Davidson will return home to face Georgia Southern Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Belk Arena.
Notes: Furman broke an 11 game losing streak against Davidson and improved to 11-1 at home this season … Brooks' 16 points were a career high … McKillop now needs 24 more 3-pointers to pass his older brother and current assistant coach Matt McKillop … Kuhlman now has 21 assists and no turnovers in his last three games.
