Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson Wildcats scored seven runs on two outs and had the winning run at the plate before Roman Grimaldi's leaping catch at the left field wall made for a dramatic conclusion to the Georgia Southern Eagles' 15-13 win in the opening game of the SoCon series Thursday night at Wilson Field.

Davidson (19-27, 5-20 SoCon) trailed 15-6 entering the final half-inning, and Georgia Southern (31-19, 17-8 SoCon) looked in control as reliever Charles Matthews got two quick outs to start the bottom of the ninth. Matthews entered in the eighth with one on and one out, and after giving up a single to sophomore first baseman Drew Gadaire (3-for-5, 3 RBI), got two outs to strand a pair.

But he would not be as lucky in the ninth, as sophomore center fielder Coleman Barron (2-for-5) started the Wildcats' comeback with an infield single and moved to second when pinch hitter Will General (1-for-1) slapped a second straight single into left field. Sophomore catcher Seth Freeman (2-for-6, RBI) started the scoring, plating Barron with a double into left field, and junior right fielder Sam Payne (1-for-4) drew a walk to load the bases for Gadaire, who doubled down the left field line to score all three. Freshman third baseman Andrew Barna (1-for-5, RBI) kept the rally rolling, going up the middle to score Gadaire for his 50th RBI of the season.

The Wildcats loaded the bases for a second time in the inning, as sophomore second baseman Calvin Sigelbaum (2-for-3) was hit by a pitch and junior designated hitter #J.P. Craven# walked, to bring on Eagle closer Dexter Bobo (S, 10). Freshman shortstop Michael Zeblo (4-for-6, 4 RBI), though, answered with his career-high fourth hit of the game to plate Barna and Sigelbaum and cut the lead to two. With two on and representing the winning run, Barron nearly became the night's hero, taking Bobo's offering sky high and to deep left field before Grimaldi's leaping catch at the wall ended the Wildcat rally.

Davidson finished with 18 hits, led by Zeblo, who matched a career-high with four RBI, and hit his eighth home run of the season. Freeman, who extended his hitting streak to a team-best nine games, Sigelbaum and Barron also had multi-hit games for the Wildcats. Sophomore left fielder Jake Berman drove in a pair of runs in the third on his first home run of the season. Senior left-hander Thomas Middour (L, 4-3) took the loss, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits in three innings in the start.

Georgia Southern was led at the plate by shortstop Eric Phillips (4-for-6, 4 RBI), first baseman Kyle Blackburn (4-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) and third baseman A.J. Wirnsberger (3-for-6, 3 RBI) and finished with 19 hits. Trent Franzago (W, 2-1) earned the win after allowing just one run on one hit and striking out a pair in 1 2/3 innings of relief for Eagle starter Jake Brown.

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead on three hits and an error in the opening inning before taking control of the game with a six-run third. Davidson got three runs back in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Berman's two-run blast, but the Eagles answered with three runs on four hits in the top of the fourth to open a 11-3 lead.

Zeblo led off the fourth with his eighth home run of the season, but the Eagles again got it back in the next inning, scoring a run on two hits and an error in the fifth.

Craven drove in Gadaire, who led off the fifth with a walk, and the Wildcats would add one more score in the seventh on Zeblo's RBI-single.

Georgia Southern got two more runs in the seventh before adding their final run on Blackburn's 14th home run of the season in the top of the ninth.

The Wildcats and Eagles will play the second game of the series tomorrow at 4 p.m.
