DAVIDSON, N.C. - The fourth annual BlackOut Belk Arena will be held Thursday, Jan. 28, when the Davidson men's basketball team hosts College of Charleston at 7 p.m.
The concept behind BlackOut Belk is to flood Belk Arena with black T-shirts, showing a unified home crowd and also Davidson's commitment to the community as proceeds from the event are donated to a local charity each year. This year's charity is Circle de Luz, an organization that empowers Latino girls and young women through mentoring, programming and scholarship funds to further their education. Circle de Luz was founded by Davidson College alum and former Director of Community Service Rosie Molinary.
Black Out Belk t-shirts can be purchased for $15 Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the men's basketball game vs. against Western Carolina (tipoff at 7 p.m.). T-shirts can also be purchased at 'Cats on Main spirit store in downtown Davidson or at the Davidson Bookstore while supplies last. Shirts can be purchased via cash, check, Cat Card and credit.
Last year, BlackOut Belk raised over $4,000, and the game proceeds were donated to HAMMERS, an alliance between the Davidson Housing Coalition and Davidson College that was started in 2003 to help lower income homeowners in Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville and Mooresville.
BlackOut Belk is the tipoff game in a series of charitable events involving Davidson Basketball this season. Also scheduled are the Pink Zone event for women's basketball (Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.) which will benefit the Kay Yow Foundation, and the “Kicks from 'Cats” campaign, which enters phase two of a drive that was originally started by former Davidson player Andrew Lovedale.
