Charleston Takes Opening Game, 9-4, Friday Night

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- Entering the weekend with identical Southern Conference records, the College of Charleston Cougars took the first game of the three-game series, 9-4, Friday night at Patriots Point.

Davidson drops to 17-23 overall and an even 11-11 in the Southern Conference. Charleston improves to 28-16 overall and 12-10 in league play.

James Cerbie and Tommy Piacenza each had a pair of hits to lead the Wildcats, who had nine hits. Thomas Middour (2-5) took the loss, allowing eight runs (six earned) on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts in five innings. Mike Frongello, reigning SoCon Pitcher of the Week, and Chris Kennedy combined for one hit and one run over the final three innings.

Matt Mansilla led the Cougars with three hits, while Clay McCord and Joey Bergman each had two of Charleston's 10 hits. Jesse Simpson (8-2) earned the win, allowing just one run on five hits in seven innings, while walking six and striking out seven.

McCord led off for the Cougars with a solo home run, and Charleston added another run in the first to take a 2-0 lead. The Wildcats got a run back in the top of the second on a two-out solo home run from Cerbie.

Mansilla led off the fourth with another solo home run to make it 3-1 in favor of Charleston, who opened things up with three runs on three hits in the fifth. Grady Sizemore led off with a double in the seventh and scored the Cougars' final run in the seventh on a fly out.

Davidson threatened in the ninth, adding three runs on four hits, all on two outs. Zach Kayne started the rally with a double into left to score Cerbie, who led off with a single. Drew Gadaire sent in Kayne, and Danny Weiss drew a walk to follow. Chase FitzPatrick recorded the Wildcats' fourth hit of the night to send in the third run, but pinch hitter Sam Payne struck out to end the inning.

Davidson and Charleston will continue the series with a 4 p.m. game tomorrow afternoon.
