Charleston, S.C. –
Jake Cohen tallied 13 points and nine rebounds, and Will Archambault added 12 points, four assists and four rebounds, but the 'Cats fell 59-57 to Penn State in the Charleston Classic in Carolina First Arena Sunday morning.

Davidson overcame a 19-point first-half deficit and had the ball trailing by two with 10.6 seconds to play after a defensive stop. Brendan McKillop's contested jumper from the elbow rimmed out and the horn sounded as the teams fought for the rebound.

Archambault also had a block and two steals for the Wildcats (0-4), and JP Kuhlman scored 11 points. Kuhlman and Cohen's point totals were part of a 31-10 Davidson scoring advantage off the bench.

Jeff Brooks led the Nittany Lions (3-2) with 12 points, and Talor Battle tallied 11 points and three assists. David Jackson finished with 10 points.

Davidson used a 14-5 run midway through the second half to overcome a nine-point halftime deficit. McKillop capped the spurt with consecutive 3-pointers, which gave Davidson a 41-40 lead, its first of the game with 14:20 remaining.

The 'Cats led 49-45 late in the contest when Penn State used a 10-4 run to take a 55-52 advantage on a Brooks 3-pointer. The Nittany Lions led by four when Kuhlman hit a pull-up jumper with 48 seconds left. After a timeout, Davidson got the stop it needed to set up the last possession.

Davidson struggled offensively at the beginning of the game, missing its first five shots and committing six turnovers as Penn State started the game on a 20-4 run.

The 'Cats made a run at the end of the half to trim the margin to nine points at the break. With Davidson trailing 29-13, Nik Cochran's 3-pointer from the corner sparked a 9-1 spurt. Kuhlman hit a jumper in transition and Archambault dropped in a pair of free throws and a putback to cap the rally.

The 'Cats are back in action Wednesday as they play their home opener at 7 p.m. against Fredonia State in Belk Arena.

Game Notes: It was the first meeting between Davidson and Penn State on the hardwood… It was the first action of the season for Cochran, who played 13 minutes… Cohen's nine boards were a career high… It was the third straight game Archambault reached double figures in the scoring column.
