Davidson Lacrosse Scores 15-11 Win Over Longwood

DAVIDSON, N.C. –– Led by the sophomore combo of Jen Crawford (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Haley Cook (Darien, Conn.), the Davidson Wildcat lacrosse team scored its second straight home win with a 15-11 triumph over visiting Longwood on Wednesday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
Davidson ran its record to 6-3 overall, while the Lancers fell to 4-7 on the year. The Wildcats also improved to 4-3 at home and have won five of their past six contests, with four of the wins coming at home.
Crawford, who leads the team with 24 goals, and Cook, who is second with 19 scores, paced the Wildcat attack with three goals each and combined for 12 of Davidson's game-high 31 shots. Both players were one of five different 'Cats to start the contest with a goal, scoring at the 23:50 and 20:34 marks.
Longwood's Joyce Haines, Britt Farquharson and Karli Brentlinger led the Lancer attack with two goals each, while five others scored single goals.
Davidson set the offensive tone early with five goals in the first 10 minutes of the first half. Junior Becky Horton (Walnut Creek, Calif.), and seniors Emily Palmer (Columbus, Ohio) and Anna Mitchell (Garden City, N.Y.) were the other three 'Cats along with Crawford and Cook to score during the scoring outburst for a 5-0 lead.
Cara O'Brien and Lauren Barnaba cut the Wildcat lead to four (6-2) by scoring two of the next three goals, but Davidson went on yet another offensive run. Horton started a four-goal rally before the end of the half with a score at the 7:49 mark and later assisted on senior Kate McDonald's (Philadelphia, Pa.) goal for a 9-2 Wildcat advantage.
The senior duo of Sarah Walter (Queenstown, Md.) and Emily Diefendorf (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.) followed with a sweet give-and-go to finish out the scoring in the first half at 10-2. The assist was Walter's fifth of the season and 30th of her career.
Davidson's lead was pushed out to ten, 15-5, after a Walter goal at the 7:14 mark of the second half, but the Wildcats had to hold off a late scoring flurry by the Lancers to secure the 15-11 win.
Longwood went off for six unanswered goals in the last seven minutes, starting with a Haines score at the 6:06 mark. Haines came right back and assisted on a Farquharson goal 25 seconds later, while Farquharson added another goal with just over a minutes left in the game to bring the score to 15-10.
Haines added her second goal during the scoring outburst with 32 second left, but Davidson forced a turnover in the final 12 ticks to hold off the Lancer rally and secure the win.
Senior Laura Johnson (Baldwin, Md.) and Michelle Pav (Golden, Colo.) recorded a combined 12 saves in goal for Davidson.
Besides their game-high 31 shots, the 'Cats forced 21 Longwood turnovers, gathered in 17 groundballs and were successful on three of their seven free-position shots.
Davidson continues its five-game homestand with a contest against Navy on Saturday, Mar. 29 at 1 p.m.
