DAVIDSON, N.C. – After a month in which he averaged 29.2 points per game, tops in the country, to go along with seven assists and three steals per game, Davidson junior guard Stephen Curry was named the Southern Conference men's basketball Athlete of the Month today.
Curry helped lead the Wildcats to a 5-1 record, which is their best start since the 2002-03 season, a No. 22 ranking in the latest Associated Press poll and a No. 24 spot in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
The Charlotte, N.C., native scored a career-high 44 points, which is the top single-game scoring performance in the nation so far this season, in Davidson's contest at Oklahoma. He also matched a school record by sinking all 14 of his free-throw attempts on his way to the fifth-highest scoring total in Davidson history.
In the season opener against Guilford Nov. 14, Curry recorded a career-high nine steals, which is the most by any player in the country in a single game this year. He also added 29 points and 10 assists in the game, falling just one steal shy of the second triple-double in Davidson history.
He earned Player of the Week honors twice during the month, giving him 10 Player of the Week awards during his career. He has now been named Athlete of the Month a total of nine times, including the last six.
After a 10-day break, Davidson returns to action this Saturday, Dec. 6, when it plays host to NC State at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte. Tipoff between the Wildcats and Wolfpack is scheduled for noon, and the game will be televised on Fox Sports Net South.
