DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson women's basketball team pushed their season-best win streak to five straight behind junior Mercedes Robinson's (Baltimore, Md.) second consecutive double-double, and eighth overall on the season, in a 74-59 Southern Conference win over the Furman Paladins on Tuesday evening at John M. Belk Arena.
Davidson's fifth straight victory ran its overall mark to 13-7 and its league mark to 7-2 in SoCon play. The win also marked the ninth time in the past 10 meetings the Wildcats have secured a win over the Paladins. Furman fell to 6-15 overall and 2-7 in SoCon action.
The 59 points allowed is the fourth straight game Davidson has held its opponent to under 60 points, improving to 6-0 when doing so.
Robinson led three Wildcats in double figures with game highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds as she finished 5-of-10 from the field, including a couple of three-balls, and hit all four of her free throws. The 16-point effort was the second game in a row she has scored that many, and it's the third time in the past four games she has accomplished the feat. Of her 10 rebounds, nine of them were on defense as Robinson has now hauled in 24 of her last 25 boards on the defensive end.
Freshman Ashley Lax (Little Rock, Ark.) had a career game off the bench, setting season highs in points (11) and field goals (5-of-7), while hauling in five of her six boards on the defensive glass. Davidson easily outrebounded Furman by the count of 39-24.
Rounding out the Wildcat double-figure scorers was senior Danielle Hemerka (Blackwood, N.J.) with 10 points, while also chipped in six rebounds and three assists. She was one of six players to shot over 50 percent in leading Davidson to a season-high 52 percent field goal percentage. The Wildcats were even better from three-land, nailing 56.3 percent of their treys on 9-of-16 shooting.
Furman also placed three players in double figures, led by Sarah Baker's 14 points, 10 of them coming in the second half.
After falling behind by eight points in the first half (16-8), Davidson responded with a 14-0 run to regain the lead for good at 22-16 with 5:19 remaining in the half.
Later in the period, a Robinson layup capped off a seven-point run by the forward in a one-minute span that gave the Wildcats its biggest lead of the half at 35-22 with around two minutes to go before intermission. Davidson would go into halftime up 37-27.
Furman hung around though, trimming a 43-31 Wildcat advantage in the second half to just a three-point lead at 50-47 with a 16-7 run, finished off by a Baker layup.
Lax and senior Honna Housley (Riceville, Tenn.) stepped up for the Wildcats and halted Furman's run by scoring 10 of the 'Cats next 12 points on a couple of layups and two shots from long range to push Davidson's lead back out to double digits at 62-51 with 4:57 remaining in the game.
Furman got no closer than seven points and Robinson finished off the Wildcat scoring night with two free throws in the last five seconds as Davidson took home the 74-59 victory.
Davidson showed its unselfishness in the second half, dishing out 11 of its 20 assists in the half as the Wildcats shot 53.8 percent in the second period. Sophomore Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) led the team with eight assists, matching her career-best.
