CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Despite placing three players in double digits for the 12th time this year, the Davidson Wildcats could not off-set Chattanooga's Alex Anderson's 39 points, 22 of them in the second half, in dropping a 73-62 Southern Conference road decision in women's basketball on Monday evening at McKenzie Arena.
Davidson fell to 7-4 in SoCon play and 13-9 overall, dropping just its second game in the past seven. Chattanooga continued its season-high winning streak with its 15th straight, and 16th in league play, to improve to 12-0 in league action and 20-3 overall.
Senior Honna Housley (Riceville, Tenn.) in her return trip back to her home state of Tennessee, and in front of friends and family, matched her career-best with a team-high 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. She also added four boards and a couple of assists while scoring in double figures for the ninth time this year.
Fellow teammates junior Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore Julia Paquette (Stockbridge, Ga.), went for 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Robinson, coming off three straight double-doubles, was three rebounds short as she finished with a team-best seven. Davidson as a team outrebounded Chattanooga by two, 40-38.
Anderson answered every Davidson run in the second half. In scoring her 39 points, she was 14-of-24 from the field and added 11 more points at the charity stripe. Anderson closed out the game by scoring 18 of the final 20 UTC points.
No other Moc scored over 10 points, with Jenaya Wade-Fray finishing second with nine points.
Trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half, Davidson knotted things up at 45-all on a fast-break layin by Paquette with 14:26 left. Paquette scored seven of her 12 points in the second half.
Then shortly after Chattanooga took a 51-45 lead, Davidson once again tied things up at 53-all with a 8-2 run, started by senior Katie Hamilton's (Lilburn, Ga.) three-pointer and finished by a Robinson jumper at the 9:30 mark.
Anderson then took over, scoring 18 of the Mocs' final 20 points as Chattanooga's lead grew to as many as 12 points before the final score of 73-62.
Davidson held the Mocs to 39.7 percent shooting, while hitting 42.9 percent of its own shots, but the Wildcats had an uncharacteristic shooting night from behind the arc with a 4-of-16 performance. The Wildcats were coming off a 10-for-20 performance from downtown in its last game at Western Carolina.
The first half was a game of runs for both teams. After Chattanooga raced out to a 16-4 lead, forcing Davidson to burn a 30-second timeout, the Wildcats used a 17-5 run capped off by a Robinson jumper from the right wing to bring them back to within two at 23-21 and 5:44 on the clock.
Anderson helped push the Moc lead back to double digits by scoring seven of Chattanooga's next 11 points and Davidson trailed 34-23 at the 2:10 mark. The Moc forward would scored 17 in the first half on 5-of-8 shooting and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe.
But, Davidson closed out the half with a small 8-4 run to close to within seven points at 38-31 before intermission.
Of Davidson's 24 field goals on the night, it assisted on a game-high 15 of them and pocketed a game-high 11 steals.
The Wildcats will cap off its three-game road swing with a trip to Appalachian State this Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m.
