Putnam, Wildcats Cruise by VCU in Series Opener

It's the most runs the Wildcats have scored in a game this season and their largest margin of victory. Now 7-13 overall, Davidson improved to 3-1 in the Atlantic 10, while VCU fell to 4-17 and 0-4.
Putnam hit a two-run shot in an eight-run second inning, which put the Wildcats in control for good, and he added a three-run bomb to highlight a six-run seventh. He had RBI-doubles in the second and fourth to finish 4-for-5 at the plate.
Putnam had help, too, as Jack Cotrone went back-to-back with him in the second, hitting his team-leading fifth home run of the year. And Chris Schuchart hit a two-run shot in the seventh. Schuchart finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs and also had a double, while Michael O'Shaughnessy was 3-for-6 with a double and three RBIs.
In the second, the Wildcats overcame a 3-0 deficit by sending 13 batters to the plate and knocking seven hits. They took the lead on Jamie Daly's two-RBI single, and like Putnam, O'Shaughnessy had two hits in the inning.
Perkins (3-3) overcame a rocky start to toss seven innings, including 1-2-3 frames in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh. He allowed two hits, two earned runs and struck out three and didn't allow a hit after the second.
Matt Hamilton pitched the final two innings, allowing only a solo home run and striking out four.
Friday marked the third time this year the Wildcats have hit four homers in a game, also including the Feb. 28 game against Lafayette and the nightcap of last Saturday's doubleheader with UMass.
