GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Davidson College women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season defeating Furman 2-1 after scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes of the match Sunday.
With the win, the 'Cats move to 1-1 overall with six games remaining in the non-conference portion of the 2024 schedule.Â
Aleia Gisolfi-McCready netted the first goal of the young season (81:14) for the Wildcats while Dakota Lyons tallied a goal (88:58) in her debut season as a Wildcat.Â
Emily Smith finished her 90 minutes of goalkeeping action with a pair of saves, facing five shots on goal and allowing just one Paladin goal.Â
Furman found itself taking an advantage into the halftime break as they recorded the games first goal in the 40th minute courtesy of Katie Bengough. The Paladins controlled much of the first half pace as well, out-shooting the 'Cats 9-4 overall and receiving six corner kick attempts.Â
Davidson was able to swing the pendulum in its favor through the second half of action, peppering 12 total shots through the final 45 minutes. Gisolfi-McCready dashed any hopes of a Furman shutout when she landed a shot to top center off an assist from Ella Barnes, which was the first of her career.Â
With the score tied 1-1 and less than three minutes on the clock, SJ Pak found the foot of Lyons who recorded what would be the game-winning goal for the Wildcats as just a little over a minute remained on the clock.Â
The 'Cats defense proved solid through the final 45 minutes of action as well, allowing the Paladins to take just one off target shot attempt in addition to clearing both Furman corners.Â
Davidson will look to continue its winning ways in its home-opening match 6 p.m. Thursday versus East Tennessee State University at Alumni Stadium.Â
