LEXINGTON, VA. - The Davidson women's soccer team out-shot VMI 15-5 but ultimately was edged 1-0 in its season opener on the road Thursday.
Emma Rice recorded the difference-maker for the Keydets, scoring VMI's goal in the 81st minute on a long ball to the high left corner just out of the reach of starting goalkeeper Emily Smith.
Davidson held VMI to just three shots over the opening half, none of which were on target, while the 'Cats peppered seven shots of their own, three into the gloves of Keydet goalkeeper Whitney Tracy.
Coming out of the break, the 'Cats and Keydets continued their defensive battle with Davidson continuing to hold an advantage on offense, tacking on eight shots.
Davidson's best look at notching a goal came in the 63rd minute when freshman Amy Zona played a cross to the head of Maddie Moody, just inches from landing out of the reach of Tracy.
However, VMI scored on an 18-yard strike by Rice, the first of her collegiate career.
For Davidson, Smith played the entire 90 minutes in-goal, while Aleia Gisolfi-McCready (3 shots), Dakota Lyons (2 shots, 1 on goal) and Katy Talotta (2 shots, 1 on goal) led the offense.
The Wildcats will look to earn their first win of the season when they travel to Greenville, S.C., to face Furman 1:30 p.m. Aug. 25.
