Anderson's Late Homer Helps 'Cats Earn DH Split and Series Win

5/17/2024 8:00:00 PM | Baseball

FAIRFAX, Va. — Hunter Anderson's two-run, ninth-inning home run capped a Davidson comeback, helped the Wildcats earn a doubleheader split and put an exclamation point on the 2024 season Friday afternoon at George Mason.

With the 10-9 win and the preceding 6-3 loss, the Wildcats close the 2024 season 24-28 overall and 10-14 in the Atlantic 10.

Game 1
Joe Haney continued his recent power-hitting tear by blasting two more home runs in the 6-3 loss.

His solo shots in the sixth and ninth — both to right field — gave him six home runs this season, including five in five games.

The Patriots led 5-0 in the fifth until Cider Canon's sacrifice fly scored Jacob Friend.

On the mound, reliever Adam Katz had another strong outing, tossing four innings, allowing one earned run and two hits and striking out two. Jake Dunagan struck out two in a scoreless eighth.

Game 2
Trailing 9-2 after six, the Wildcats scored eight runs in the final three innings to win 10-9 in storybook fashion.

And it was Anderson, who has proven to have a flare for the dramatic — most notably with a walk-off grand slam against Tennessee Tech last year — who delivered the go-ahead shot, a two-run blast in the ninth.

Then it was up to Matt Weber to close the door, and the lefty pitcher did so with two strikeouts.

The Wildcats started the comeback with four runs in the seventh, thanks to a Noah Jouras (4-for-4) RBI-single, a two-RBI single from Nick Calero and an Anderson bases-loaded walk. Davidson got two more runs in the eighth after Jouras doubled, and runs scored on Jake Wilhoit and Chris Schuchart groundouts.

An Anderson RBI-single in the second and a Schuchart RBI-double in the fifth gave the Wildcats the 2-0 lead they held until George Mason scored five in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Prior to Weber, Micah Baermann (0.2 IP) and Thomas Whelan (2.0) kept the Patriots at nine runs.
